2016 Meals on Wheels 5K Run/3K Walk a Great Success!
The 2016 Meals on Wheels Outrunning Senior Hunger 5k Run / 3k Walk is “in the books” and will go down as a great success for two important reasons:
First, due to the tremendous support of our sponsor, participants and donors, we raised roughly $17,000 in support of homebound seniors throughout Central and Eastern Montgomery County! This money goes directly to Meals on Wheels food, equipment and staffing expenses of Montco SAAC, representing meals for 123 older adults for one month. THANK YOU!
Secondly, Mike Kwon spoke about the impact of Meals on Wheels upon his own family. If you were not fortunate enough to hear him, you’ll want to read this brief background and excerpt:
|Jesse Clancy finished first.
Mike’s father was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer in 2012. For the next several years his mother prepared his father’s meals, tracked his medicines, took him to the doctor and for treatments, all while working full time, six days a week. In 2014, the family learned their mom had the same disease.
“My family witnessed mom slowly weaken and struggle with taking care of herself and my father. It was a great burden to her that she was no longer able to care for my father because of her failing health. When Meals on Wheels began to deliver two hot meals a day, she took comfort in knowing that these meals are prepared with the same love and care. Four months ago, my mom lost her battle with cancer. If she were still here today, she would share the same sentiments with everyone here. This wonderful organization provides support to us in the community at the most fundamental level during times of great hardship. I hope that by sharing my story you can all see how Meals on Wheels provides an important and much needed service to our community.”
